WEEK THIRTEEN: DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Overall Plan: Strengthening Community Interaction

Focus of Design: To achieve a sustainable design solution and builds on strengthening the current community of Paddington central by providing opportunities for social interation

Improve the current building program without disregarding it

Maintain the existing character of Paddington Central

Create a design alternative to the potential for online shopping to replace the ‘physical store’

Maintain and improve on community interaction

Create a sustainable design solution that improves on the existing design that works with the existing structure and doesn’t replace it

Maintain current stores located on the site (The current shop program works well), and aim to not increase store space rental prices by making drastic structural changes

Incorporate some ‘common land’ for social interaction and cross-demographic exposure

Support local businesses; provide a spatial opportunity for many individuals to buy and sell locally and not from a single chain store (Woolworths)

Relax the separation of pedestrian and vehicle pathways. Create open space shared zones.

Lower Ground Floor Plan

Replace Woolworths with an open market space. This will support the local community and encourage social interaction that is lost through online shopping.

Design market stall fit outs the unifies the shops, but allows oppurtunities for users to create individuality

Create ‘common land’ open space with suggestive design spaces to allow for individuals to interact or be in the presence of others. This allows exposure of different demographics to each other (eg: Elderly people exposed to young children playing)

Relax the separation of pedestrians and vehicles. Create shared zones “activities occur where cars and pedestrians meet”- A Pattern Language

Latrobe Terrace Level Floor Plan

Provide a new access opportunity from Latrobe Terrace to the new proposed market place

Provide natural lighting opportunities and visual accessibility between the floors

Alter the current circulation patterns into the site
